User's Tip
For the PC User Tip this week, we will tell you about a cheap
alternative to Adobe Acrobat for generating PDF files. Since Word files
can be infected with viruses, some e-mail filters won't even let them
through. In addition, there can be compatibility problems between
versions so sending Word files via e-mail may not be a good option.
So, if you need to share a document electronically, convert it to a PDF
file. PDF files can be read on any computer and the formatting is
retained from the original document.
But don't spend hundreds of dollars for Adobe Acrobat. Instead try
doPDF, a free PDF converter for both personal and commercial use. Using
doPDF you can create searchable PDF files by selecting the "Print"
command from virtually any application since doPDF is installed as a
printer. With one click you can convert your Microsoft Excel, Word or
PowerPoint documents or your emails and favorite web sites to PDF files.
Check it out at http://www.dopdf.com/.

User's Tip
For
the Mac User Tip this week, I will tell you about another trick to help
you manage your PDF files. Last week, I told you about Skim, a free
program that lets you take notes on PDF documents. This week, I want to
continue along those same lines by telling you how to use TextEdit to
combine multiple multi-page PDFs into one document.
All you have to do is drag each PDF from the Finder into a blank
TextEdit document. Just make sure the the document is in Rich Text mode
by clicking Format then clicking on Make Rich Text. It doesn’t matter
if the PDFs are single- or multi-page; you can mix and match as you
wish.
Single page PDFs appear as a page of text and/or images in the
document. What is really cool is when you drop in a multi-page PDF, it
appears with its own scroll bar, so you can scroll through the PDF
within the larger TextEdit window. Of course, you can also add some
line breaks between PDFs, just to separate them all a bit more.
Once you’ve assembled your mega-PDF, just click File then Save to store
it permanently on your computer.
There is one little draw back to this trick. You can’t print a mega-PDF
since it will only print the first page of the embedded multi-page PDF.
